I love this quote from Rumi. I think what Rumi was trying to express is that only through observing our fears, looking at what causes us pain and examining our belief's/disbelief's are we truly going to bring ourselves to full enlightenment.

Side note: Did you know that Rumi had a large collection of books. In the 13th century books were being hand copied and were a prized possession. Rumi's friend and spiritual mentor Shams, threw all of Rumi's books down the village well, so Rumi would depend on his inner guidance, instead of the ideas of others.
